Texas police said Friday it had detained a woman who allegedly kidnapped her 2-year-old granddaughter and attempted to flee the state with her.

Sherry Lee McGill, 49, was identified as the suspect in the alleged kidnapping of her granddaughter, Aurora Lopez. Police said the young girl was found safely and took McGill into custody, but did not say if charges had been lodged.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said it was called to the home of Aurora’s family in San Antonio around 1 a.m. Officers were told the child was allegedly taken by McGill, who fled the area in her black 2012 Honda Accord. An amber alert was issued, warning Aurora was in “in grave or immediate danger.”

Police said they suspected McGill was taking her to Oklahoma, but the first few hours of searching yielded no results.

Around 9 a.m., a Texas Department of Public Safety patrol car spotted a car matching the description of McGill’s Honda on Interstate 35 near Lacy Lakeview, Texas. The patrol pulled the car off into the parking lot of a local convenience store and identified McGill and Aurora.

McGill was detained by police and Aurora was returned to her family.
