As their own little way of saying thank you to NHS healthcare workers who continue to wage on the battle against COVID-19, the United Kingdom video games industry has decided to let frontliners access a treasure cove of games for free.

“Games for Carers” is the brainchild of computer and video games journalist Chris Scullion and has since been supported by game influencer Keymailer, and Ukie, UK's premiere games and interactive entertainment trading body.

The initiative is fairly simple, but will definitely a long way, especially for healthcare workers who want to relax after the hustle and bustle of being in the center of the pandemic. Their families can take advantage of it, too, considering that “Games for Carers” goes hand in hand with the government's “Stay Home, Save Lives” campaign.

“Our amazing NHS staff are working hard on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus, and it is brilliant to see the UK's video games industry uniting to say thank you through this campaign,” said Creative Industries Minister Caroline Dinenage in a press release.

She added that together with video game companies, the industry is making an impact to flatten the curve and prevent the spread of COVID-19, and that she is “delighted” for the “innovative way” of supporting the NHS.

On the other hand, Ukie Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jo Twist extended UK's gaming industry's part in promoting “vital public health messages” and that their community is once again united to thank the frontliners.

“Games companies of all sizes and players everywhere recognize their exceptional dedication and hope this initiative goes some way to help them to understand how respected and valued they are,” she said.'

NHS workers will be able to claim a free game or game subscription starting April 29 and choose from among the 85,000 plus gaming titles across different genres, ratings and platforms. All they have to do is visit the Games for Cares website and enter their NHS email.

Games for Carers is backed by some of the industry's leading names in gaming development and publishing such as Activision, Electronic Arts, Konami, SEGA and Xbox Game Studios, among others. Independent studios also rendered their support to the cause.
