These Television Classics Are Getting ABC’s Next Live Comedy Treatment
The success of ABC’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” has led to the planned production of more live comedy events.
A holiday mash-up episode of “All in the Family” and “Good Times,” once again with Jimmy Kimmel and Norman Lear backing it, is set to air during the holiday season and serve as a sequel to the “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” special that aired in May.
"The holiday season is the perfect time for families to come together and enjoy another ‘Live in Front of a Studio Audience’ special on ABC,” ABC’s entertainment president Karey Burke said Tuesday in an official statement obtained by the Hollywood Reporter. "Only Jimmy and Norman can top what they accomplished the first time. From the superstar talent to the unforgettable music and the richly deserved Emmy win, their collective vision has introduced a whole new generation of people to these groundbreaking and timeless stories.”
Big names have stepped on board to help make this special just as successful as the first one.
“Scandal” star Kerry Washington will serve as an executive producer along with Will Ferrell, Brent Miller and Justin Theroux.
“All in the Family” originally aired in 1971 and starred Carroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton, Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner. The popularity of the show created several spinoffs including “The Jeffersons”, “Good Times” and “Archie Bunker’s Place”.
In May’s live version of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons”, Woody Harrelson played Archie Bunker and Marisa Tomei played Edith Bunker. As of right now, ABC has not announced whether or not these two will be returning for the sequel.
Kimmel expressed excitement for the sequel, saying in the official statement: "Being a part of Norman Lear’s world was a career highlight, and working with great actors on these great shows was so much fun, we couldn’t resist tackling a holiday episode of ‘All in the Family' and one of my favorites, ‘Good Times’.”
The sequel is set to air Dec. 18. on ABC.
