Thiago Silva Headed To Stamford Bridge On One-Year Deal
KEY POINTS
- Thiago Silva set to move to Chelsea next season on a one-year deal
- Silva move shuts any chance of extended stay with PSG
- Chelsea nearing deals with Havertz and Chilwell
Thiago Silva is on the verge of playing for a new club next season. Reports are coming in that the 35-year-old midfielder is in the final stages of joining Chelsea F.C. on a one-year deal. He is due to have a medical this week.
According to The Athletic, Silva will join the Blues on a free transfer. The one-year deal will include an option to extend it by a year, likely depending on how well the Brazilian performs with Chelsea next season.
Aside from Chelsea, the only other club pursuing Silva was Fiorentina. But based on the latest updates, it appears the veteran midfielder has chosen to move to Stamford Bridge.
In a previous post, PSG allegedly had plans to try and retain the Brazilian defender. Thomas Tuchel hinted that he would try to find a way to keep Silva at Parc des Princes though the chances of that happening were pretty low.
Tuchel had grown fond of Silva who the club acquired way back in 2012. The Brazilian was well-loved by PSG fans and groups were calling for another extension. But it appears all those are for naught with Silva looking to move on another chapter of his football career.
The infusion of Silva may come as a bit of a surprise to some. Chelsea has been aggressively getting young and rising stars. So far, they have Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell are believed to be next on the list. According to Sky Sports, the Blues are nearing a deal for the two players and something could go down in the coming days.
It would be a brand new environment for Silva who will try to infuse some veteran experience in the mix. He is expected to guide the younger players and continue his contributions to the Blues.
But Silva's coming is also likely to mean that some players could be on their way out. One name suggested is Fikayo Tomori who is likely to be loaned out. Some other players could be headed out the door as Lampard tries to juggle who among his current players to keep and who to let go.
