- Representative Omar of Minnesota wants Americans to receive $2,000 monthly checks
Democratic lawmakers on Thursday sent a letter urging the Biden administration to consider giving Americans more relief by providing them with monthly recurring cash payments until the coronavirus pandemic is gone.
The Jan. 28 letter — which was signed by 53 Democratic members of the House, including prominent Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan — was sent to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Dear President Biden and Vice President Harris,” the letter began. “We kindly request that your incoming administration consider including support for recurring cash payments in your future economic relief plans. Recurring payments would provide a long-term lifeline to struggling Americans for the duration of this deadly pandemic.”
“Recurring direct payments until the economy recovers will help ensure that people can meet their basic needs, provide racially equitable solutions, and shorten the length of the recession,” the letter continued. “As we look at the coming year, another one-time round of checks would provide a temporary lifeline, but when that money runs out, families will once again struggle to pay for basic necessities.”
The Democrats did not specify an intended amount for the recurring payments. However, Omar tweeted Thursday that she's hoping for $2,000 monthly checks.
“$2,000 monthly payments until the pandemic is over,” she wrote.
The group also outlined several conditions they want to see met, such as the distribution of payments to all immigrant workers, refugees, disabled and elderly dependents, and people over the age of 16 still claimed as dependents.
The letter comes as Democrats in Congress draft a legislation that could provide $300 monthly cash payments to American families. A preliminary version of the measure would make the IRS responsible for distributing $300 monthly aid for children under the age of 6 and $250 for those between the ages of 6 and 17.
The legislation would give $3,600 a year for kids under 6 and $3,000 for children who are older. It would also make child tax credit “fully refundable.” This means American families would still receive the complete amount regardless of what they owe in taxes.
