Third Stimulus Check: Some Americans Already Received Their $1,400 Payments Today
KEY POINTS
- The IRS has started sending out $1,400 payments to eligible Americans
- Payments will continue to be sent over the coming weeks
- Americans can see the status of their payments using the IRS' online tool
Some Americans have already received their stimulus payments, just days after President Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan into law.
The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Services have started sending out the first batch of the third round of U.S. coronavirus relief payments -- $1,400 for single taxpayers earning less than $75,000 and $2,800 for married couples making less than $150,000 -- which anchor the president's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. The stimulus package, one of the biggest economic rescue plans in United States history, also gives eligible households an additional $1,400 per dependent and up to $3,600 in child tax credit.
“Stimulus cash is already out the door,” NBC News’ Sahil Kapur wrote on Twitter. “This is a bank posting sent to me by a member of a family of four making under $150,000.”
Americans whose direct deposit information is with the IRS are expected to receive their payments first. A Treasury Department official said on a Friday call with reporters that more relief will roll out in the “coming weeks.”
“The checks are going to start arriving today," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on MSNBC's 'The Sunday Show.' "New Yorkers should start receiving the checks today, and many of them will get them this week. We promise that.”
“Republicans blocked it. We said put us in power, we'll get it done," Schumer added.
The IRS also will begin sending out paper checks and Economic Impact Payments (EIP) cards before the end of the month.
Americans waiting for the arrival of the third round of stimulus payments can use the IRS Get My Payment tool to track its status. The online tool is updated daily.
Americans using the Get My Payment tool will see one of four different messages:
Payment Status: A payment has been processed, a payment date is available and payment is to be sent either by direct deposit or mail.
That message means the stimulus payments may be issued through a paper check or an EIP card.
Payment Status: You’re eligible, but a payment has not been processed and a payment date is not yet available.
The IRS’ online tool will not show the amount of payment it will send out.
Payment Status Not Available
This message means the IRS has yet to process the payment, or the user is not eligible for a payment.
Need More Information
The payment was returned to the IRS after the Postal Service failed to deliver the checks. People who get this message can use the Get My Payment tool to provide bank account information.
