Third Suspected Organ Found At Detroit Waste Treatment Facility
Detroit investigators have a mystery on their hands: for the third time in a week, a suspected organ was found at the Water Resource Recovery Facility, a wastewater treatment plant.
Staff found what appeared to be an organ Wednesday night at the wastewater treatment facility near the city’s downtown area, according to WJBK. It was unclear if the organ belonged to a human or an animal.
Two other organs, thought to be kidneys, were found earlier this week. One was found Friday and another was found Saturday.
“I know in the ... past weeks we've had some other incidents. There is an investigation into it right now. The results are still not back from the medical examiner for the origin of the recovered organs in the past week, so it's an ongoing investigation,” said Capt. Darin Szilagy of the Detroit Police Department to WJBK.
The mystery organ, like the first two, was sent to the county medical examiner for investigation.
The plant’s operator, the Great Lakes Water Authority, released a statement Friday about the first two organs.
“Staff members noticed an object in the Water Resource Recovery Facility's (formerly known as wastewater treatment plant) wastewater screening area — the area that filters out debris from the wastewater before it goes into the treatment process.
Staff members immediately notified the Detroit Police Department (DPD), who responded to the scene and took custody of the object. Today, a second object was observed in the same area, and staff followed the same protocol, notifying DPD. We have no further information on what DPD has identified the objects to be, or where it entered the wastewater system.
This does not affect the water treatment process.”
A spokesperson from the county medical examiner’s office said it likely would take weeks to identify the organs.
