Thomas S Monson Quotes: Sayings By 16th President Of Latter-Day Saints Church
Thomas S. Monson, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Tuesday at the age of 90. His cause of death was said to be his degraded health condition due to his age.
Monson, who was born in Salt Lake City, on Aug. 21, 1927, served as the 16th president since Feb. 3, 2008. According to his bio on the church's website, Monson served as a Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church since Nov. 10, 1985, and on March 12, 1995, he was set apart as First Counselor to President Gordon B. Hinckley. Before that, he was Second Counselor to President Howard W. Hunter, and later Second Counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson. He was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on Oct. 4, 1963, and ordained an Apostle on Oct. 10, 1963, at the age of 36.
"Sustained as an Apostle at the age of 36, President Monson was one of the youngest men to be called to this position," his website says. "At age 22, after his marriage to Frances Beverly Johnson, President Monson was called to serve as the bishop of the Sixth-Seventh Ward in Salt Lake City. Eighty-five widows lived in the ward, and as a young bishop he visited each one regularly, making sure their spiritual and temporal needs were met. It was also here he began his lifelong involvement with the Boy Scouts of America."
