Thousands Launch Campaign To Blow Away Hurricane Irma Using Electric Fans
As people are scrambling to escape the wrath of Hurricane Irma, a group of people have decided to fight the storm and have even found a way to do so.
In an attempt to inject some humor into the tense situation created by the hurricane, a large number of people have come together to start an online campaign to change the path of the storm using a rather ridiculous and impractical method — blowing it away with electric fans.
A Facebook event started earlier this week by a West Florida resident Joshua Stanland called ' Everybody Points Their Fans At The Hurricane To Blow It Away' has got people signing up in droves.
The description of the event reads: “ Everyone takes their fans outside and points them at Hurricane Irma to blow it away from us. Air compressors with a blow gun attachment also a plus, or anything else. Get creative. Date/time subject to change due to the unpredictable path it may take.
*Not responsible for any collapsed lungs should you choose to blow manually.”
Scheduled from Sept.7 through Sept.13, about 59,000 people have already signed up for the event and another 41,000 are “interested.” While the event is clearly meant to insert a dash of humor into the situation, enthusiastic people rose to the occasion and posted pictures and videos of themselves on social media with fans, with captions saying they were prepared to blow the hurricane away.
Another event was created along similar lines in which a group planned to protest at St. Pete Beach in Florida to protest against the hurricane convince it to turn around.
"Why run from our problem when we can FACE IT? Everyone meet at St. Pete Beach. We will face south east as the storm approaches and hope it will turn away from the west coast. Please note: This is a PEACEFUL protest and any physical violence will not be tolerated. You will be promptly removed from this event. Bring signs and let our voices be heard! THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD! We will not tolerate this storm tearing up our homes," the description of the event as posted on Facebook reads.
Despite the attempts at humor in the grim hurricane season, experts have encouraged everyone in the direct path of the hurricane to evacuate and stay out of danger. Tagged the most powerful storm to ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Irma has been tracing its path ahead along the north Caribbean.
Smaller islands such as Antigua and Barbuda were hit by the hurricane through Tuesday and Wednesday with the eye of the storm moving onto the Bahamas and Haiti on Thursday. The storm is predicted to reach Florida over the weekend where large scale evacuations are being conducted. According to the Guardian, central Florida is expected to witness winds of up to 110mph. Florida Governor Rick Scott has warned that the storm will be “bigger than our entire state.”
