Three people died and three others were injured in a head-on collision near Stonington, Connecticut.

The collision occurred about 8 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 95. Abigayl Lanphear, 17, was driving in the southbound lanes when her Mercedes-Benz crossed into the northbound lanes and crashed head-on into a Honda driven by an elderly couple.

Connecticut State Police said Lanphear and the elderly couple were all killed in the crash that totaled both cars. The driver of the Honda was identified as Roger Noel, 85, Dorothy Noel, 83, was riding in the front passenger seat.

The other two passengers in the Honda were identified as Yvonne Noel, 56, and Cynthia Plaziak, 62. Noel was said to be seriously injured while Plaziak suffered minor injuries. Jada Laboy, 17, was riding with Lanphear and suffered major injuries.

Police closed a large part of the interstate for several hours while crews and responders cleared the scene. An investigation has been opened into why Lanphear veared into oncoming traffic.
