Three-Time NBA Champion Wants Out Of Rockets, Celtics Among Teams Interested: Report
KEY POINTS
- Danny Green is expected to be waived or bought out
- Green may be more efficient coming off the bench on contending teams like the Lakers and the Celtics
- The Houston Rockets are unlikely to change course as they focus on the development of their young core
The NBA trade deadline has officially passed, and the next focus of teams is the buyout market. One team that is reportedly keeping tabs is the Boston Celtics, which hardly got anything from the trade frenzy.
There are notable names expected to be either bought out or waived, such as John Wall and Danny Green, both of whom are currently with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets are a rebuilding team and are focusing on youth, which may be hints that Green and Wall are likely to be gone soon.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported Friday on "NBA Today" that the league-leading Boston Celtics are interested in Green, who reportedly wants the Houston Rockets to waive him. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.
The three-time NBA champion was part of the trade between the Rockets and the Memphis Grizzlies Thursday.
Aside from the Celtics, other teams exploring the possibility of getting the 35-year-old guard include the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Wojnarowski.
But there is something to ponder on a potential Danny Green signing. Aside from the fact that his NBA career is at a crossroads, he is coming off an ACL injury, which he sustained during last year's NBA playoffs when he was still with the Philadelphia 76ers.
He returned to action only this month and has played in only three games so far. He has yet to get his groove back, shooting 27.3% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc.
Given his average of only 14.3 minutes of playing time, per Basketball-Reference, it is hardly surprising that the road to redemption will not be easy for the former North Carolina Tar Heel.
When healthy, Green can be efficient on both ends of the court. He is a 39.9% three-point shooter and is known to play hard-nosed defense.
Hence, it makes sense that Green would be better off joining another team and coming off the bench. He will be of no use to the Rockets, which are prioritizing the development of their younger core over veterans. Houston is not in a win-now mode.
