Tiffany Haddish Cancels Atlanta Show, Calls Abortion Ban 'New Slavery'
Tiffany Haddish has a knack for finding the humor in most things, but Georgia's new abortion ban is not one of them. The "Girls Trip" actress canceled her June 22 show at Atlanta's Fox Theatre stating, "I cannot in good faith perform there."
According to People, the 39-year-old said in a statement this past Saturday, "After much deliberation, I am postponing my upcoming show in Atlanta. I love the state of Georgia but I need to stand with women and until they withdraw Measure HB481, I cannot in good faith perform there."
A representative of Fox Theatre told CNN that refunds are available for ticketholders.
Measure HB481 that Haddish referenced is the law Georgia Governer Brian Kemp signed last month which bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. The bill will go into effect in 2020.
TMZ caught up with "The Secret Life Of Pets 2" voice actor two days after she issued the statement. When they asked if the decision to cancel the show in Atlanta was a hard one, Haddish responded, "No, that wasn't tough at all."
Haddish makes it clear that she isn't just hopping on the bandwagon either. "I read that bill," she told TMZ, "and it looks like new slavery to me."
The female comedian is just the latest of big names to voice their opposition. Many celebrities, production studios and filmmakers have announced that they would stop filming in the state, including streaming giant Netflix.
Moving forward with the abortion ban could cost Georgia, big time. People reported that according to the governor's office, "last year, film and TV shoots spent over $2.7 billion in the state."
The news outlet also reported that Chief Content Officer for Netflix, Ted Sarandos, said in a statement, "We'll [Netflix] continue to film there, while also supporting partners and artists who choose not to. Should it ever come into effect, we'd rethink our entire investment in Georgia."
