Dillon Passage, the estranged husband of Joseph Maldonado-Passage, a.k.a. "Joe Exotic," is speaking out against the "Tiger King" star amid their ongoing divorce.
On Monday, Dillon's attorneys, Chris Kirker and Holly Davis, released a statement addressing the alleged "false" claims that were made by Joe in his divorce filing last week.
Joe's lawyer claimed in documents previously obtained by People that while the couple split last year, Dillon, 25, allegedly "failed to serve his husband and did not follow through with obtaining a divorce through the legal system."
Dillon's lawyers, however, claimed that this accusation is far from the truth.
"Despite Joe's false claim that Dillon did not attempt to obtain a divorce through legal means, the Kirker Davis Law Firm presented a full and comprehensive settlement agreement to Joe's lawyer, Francisco Hernandez, on September 3, 2021," read the statement from Kirker and Davis obtained by People. "On September 8, 2021, at 4:59 p.m. CST, our office received an email from Joe that said, 'It will be a cold day in hell before I sign these papers' and 'Your out of your f—n mind' (sic)."
The lawyers added that when Dillon learned that Joe was battling cancer, he paused pursuing litigation "out of respect" for his estranged husband's health crisis." However, Dillon's compassion was seemingly taken out of context, according to his attorneys.
"Our firm always urges clients to take the high road, and we applauded his compassionate decision. But Dillon now feels compelled to counter the untrue statements that Joe is making publicly," Kirker and Davis continued. "Dillon is eager to efficiently finalize the divorce agreement he proposed in September of 2021."
Lawyers for the 59-year-old Netflix star also previously claimed that he allegedly tried contacting Dillon multiple times but could not reach him, according to the court papers.
Dillon's lawyers, however, denied these claims, saying Joe is "well known for stretching the truth for personal gain, so we are unsurprised to find him doing the same in his divorce case against our client."
A lawyer for Joe issued another statement following Dillon's response to the divorce filing.
"We still have heard nothing from his lawyers or Mr. Passage, but I'm glad he's ready to move forward. My office number is on the pleadings, let's roll!" Joe's attorney claimed, according to People. "A legal case was never and therefore no legal remedy was actually pursued by Mr. Passage."
Joe and Dillon tied the knot on Dec. 11, 2017, just two months after Joe’s previous husband, Travis Maldonado, accidentally shot himself and died.
After over four years of marriage, Joe filed for divorce from Dillon Thursday in Santa Rosa County, Florida. He said in his filing that their marriage is "irretrievably broken," People previously reported.
Joe requested alimony, asked to remove Dillon's surname from his legal name and said he hopes that "they can both move on with their lives and divorce quickly and amicably."
