TikTok Bans Milk Crate Challenge After Participants Suffer Injuries From Popular Trend
The latest TikTok trend known as the Milk Crate Challenge has been banned from the social media platform to prevent any more people from injuring themselves in the act.
The challenge requires participants to stack milk crates like a pyramid and then walk up one side and down the other like stairs. However, many of the videos ended with the pyramid falling over and the participant getting injured due to the lack of stability from the crates.
To stop users from trying to get likes by filming themselves doing the challenge, TikTok has banned search results for the hashtag “Milk Crate Challenge.”
“TikTok prohibits content that promotes or glorifies dangerous acts, and we remove videos and redirect searches to our Community Guidelines to discourage such content,” a spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.
“We encourage everyone to exercise caution in their behavior whether online or off.”
Those who attempt to search the Milk Crate Challenge on TikTok will now be met with a message rather than an array of videos featuring the new trend.
“This phrase may be associated with behavior or content that violates our guidelines. Promoting a safe and positive experience is TikTok’s top priority. For more information, we invite you to review our Community Guidelines,” the message reads.
The popularity of the challenge has prompted doctors to speak out and advise people against attempting the act due to possible injuries.
Doctors have warned that falling off of the milk crates could result in dislocated hips, paralysis, fractured wrists, or even death from a back or brain injury.
As noted by the Los Angeles Times, George Gantsoudes, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Virginia, shared a tweet warning people that their health insurance might not cover injuries sustained from the Milk Crate Challenge.
“The orthopedic surgeries required to fix problems caused by this may fall under the umbrella of ‘elective surgeries,'” he wrote.
Prior to the ban, there have been multiple reports of injuries that resulted from people participating in the challenge.
