A TikTok user said she led the FBI to find YouTuber Gabby Petito’s body within the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on Sunday.
Jessica Schultz, a graphic designer who has lived out of an Airstream for the past four years, said she believes she helped the FBI detectives discover Petito’s body in Spread Creek after spotting a white van and a “man acting weird” at a nearby campsite.
In a series of videos posted on her TikTok account, Schultz said she believes she saw what seemed to be a white van belonging to Brian Laundrie, Petito’s fiancé and the prime suspect in the case, when she was headed to a dispersed campsite on Aug. 26. She said she saw the vehicle again on Aug. 27 and possibly the 28th without the man or anyone else around it.
“He was just acting weird,” the 38-year-old TikToker told The San Francisco Chronicle in a FaceTime call.
However, it wasn’t until one of her friends sent her an image of a straw hat on the dashboard of a van that she called the FBI.
“My friend texted me a picture of the hat on the dashboard and I just lost my s—,” Schultz said. “And that’s when I called the FBI (on Thursday) and said, ‘Guys, look at Spread Creek.’”
Schultz said that an FBI agent later called her and her friends for an interview just moments before they announced finding the remains of a person “consistent with the description” of Petito.
“‘I’ve talked to hundreds of people, but you guys are the ones that really tipped us off to the right place, so thank you,’” Schultz recalled the agent telling her.
“We’re triumphant — we were right and we led them in the right direction,” she added.
Petito’s death was initially ruled a homicide. However, her cause of death remains is still unclear pending final autopsy results.
The discovery of Petito’s body comes as new reports shed more light on her relationship with Laundrie. On Wednesday, an eyewitness said she and her boyfriend saw Laundrie being “aggressive” and arguing with the staff of a Tex-Mex restaurant on Aug. 27 over the bill or about money.
The witness also recalled seeing Petito apologizing for her boyfriend’s behavior after he went in and out of the restaurant about four times, according to Fox News.
The incident happened about two weeks after another eyewitness called 911 to report a domestic dispute between the couple. During the call, the witness said he saw Laundrie “slapping” Petito and attempting to lock her out of the van in Moab, Utah.
Petito, 22, was reported missing on Sept. 11, while on a cross-country road trip with Laundrie, 23, who had returned to Florida three days later. He has been missing since Sept. 14.
As of Wednesday, investigators are continuing their search for him on the Venice side of the Carlton Reserve near his home in North Port, Florida.
