A new trend on TikTok is facing backlash due to its premise requiring influencers to use gory makeup and act like deceased Holocaust victims.

Over the weekend, some influencers began sharing videos of themselves on the platform portraying Holocaust victims in heaven. Throughout the short clips, the user shares the story of how they died in the Nazi concentration camps. The trend has since transformed into users also portraying 9/11 victims.

The videos, which have been described as “trauma porn,” are being heavily criticized by the public. However, TikTok has not publicly addressed the controversial content, Insider reports.

In one of the more popular videos, the creator seems to be transported to a concentration camp where the words “Get that Jew,” and “To the showers” appear across the screen before he runs out of the frame in fear. Like many following the TikTok trend, the video uses the song "Locked Out Of Heaven" by Bruno Mars in the background of the clip.

Another creator pretended to be in the middle of a facial evaluation. After it was confirmed that she had Jewish features, she is pulled off-screen.

Although many influencers are seemingly using the trend as an opportunity to get views, one unnamed teen from New Jersey told the outlet that she initially posted her video to “educate people” on the genocide. In her video, she spoke about a family who was sent to Auschwitz and murdered in the gas chambers.

“I’ve always been interested in the history of the Holocaust and just wanted to make a creative video informing people about it on TikTok. It was never intended to be offensive,” she explained.

The teen has since removed the content from the platform.
