The Time Adam Sandler Almost Got Choked Out While Filming 'Uncut Gems'

Acting in movies is not easy. Sometimes things do not go the way they were planned by the actors. Who can forget the terrible foot injury Tom Cruise endured while shooting the sixth “Mission: Impossible” movie? One of the stars who had such a terrifying encounter while shooting for a movie is none other than Adam Sandler.

Sandler, who garnered a lot of acclaim for his acting skills in the movie “Uncut Gems,” got into a dangerous situation while performing a scene where he gets kidnapped by a group of goons.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, directors Josh and Benny Safdie revealed that Sandler was left with bruises after doing a scene with some stuntmen.

Shedding light on the incident, Josh revealed that all the guys who were manhandling Sandler were very professional, but it was their first movie. When they started the scene, the “Murder Mystery” star was “so in it” that it got a little scary for the crew because he was getting “choked” at one point.

“All three of those guys who are manhandling Sandler, it was the first movie they have done. So they were very professional, but when it is your first time – Sandler’s so in it, he is so into the character that it started to actually get a little scary. Because he is getting choked at one point in the scene,” Josh said.

Later in the interview, he explained that the crew’s stunt coordinator saw Sandler in distress. On the other hand, one of the stuntmen kept on choking the actor because he thought Sandler was really in his character.

“Our stunt coordinator had eyes on him (Sandler) the whole time and kudos to him that he was really hawk-eyed about it – because there was one take when Sandler was getting choked and he was trying to tap out. But the actor thought he was just being Howard so he choked harder, and Adam could not breathe,” Josh said.

The “Grown Ups” actor, who was also present during the interview, also admitted that he noticed some bruises on his body after the scene.

“Uncut Gems” turned out to be a huge success for Sandler. After a string of failures, the movie came like a fresh breath of air for him. The acclaimed star was nominated for Best Actor trophies at various award shows.

He was crowned Best Actor by Austin Film Critics Association, Boston Society of Film Critics Awards, Film Independent Spirit Awards, and the National Board of Review (NBR).

The movie was also included in the top 10 films of the year by the NBR.

“Uncut Gems” currently holds a score of 92% on review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Aside from Sandler, the movie also stars Julia Fox, Eric Bogosian, and LaKeith Stanfield in pivotal roles.
