When an episode of NBC’s “Timeless” involves the wild, wild west, you know it’s going to be interesting. Season 1, episode 12 saw Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer), Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter) and Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett) head to April 3, 1882. But first, the show quickly updates us on some of the personal strugglers that the time-travelers are facing.

Lucy is still grappling with the guilt and regret of erasing her sister from history. Meanwhile, Wyatt finally acts on the information he received from Garcia Flynn (Goran Visnjic). He meets the man who killed his wife in jail. Wyatt begs him to confess to killing his wife but all this man does is inform him that he knows who he and Jessica are. If he could go back in time and change things, he would. But he can’t. The good news is that Wyatt can. He more or less confesses to having a time machine.

The man who allegedly killed Wyatt’s wife seems suspicious. He admitted to knowing him but he never confessed to killing his wife. Seems fishy.

Elsewhere, Rufus learns that Rittenhouse is training a new pilot – his girlfriend Jiya. This makes thing worse since not only is his girlfriend at the center of the Rittenhouse drama but once she is trained, Rufus will be replaceable.

Regardless of their problems, the trio land in the wild west when they learn that Flynn has prevented the murder of a notorious outlaw named Jesse James (Daniel Lissing). What could Flynn want with the gun-toting serial killer? Apparently, he wants to locate a woman named Emma Whitmore.

However, Flynn learns the hard way that Jesse James isn’t someone you can bargain with. He would rather just shoot people that keep his head cool during a discussion.

Nevertheless, our favorite time-travelers need someone’s help in finding James. Lucy suggests they seek the help of the first African-American deputy marshal of the United States, Bass Reeves (Colman Domingo), or better known as, the Lone Ranger. He and his half Native-American pal Grant are committed to seeking justice. Grant is also the inspiration behind the Ranger’s buddy Tonto.

Reeves and Grant agree to help Lucy and her friends if they can get Jesse James alive.

Meanwhile, Flynn tracks Emma and she is a time-traveler! She was one of the first people ever to travel back in time but then Rittenhouse recruited her and did horrible things. In order to save her loved ones, she faked her own death and traveled to the wild west. Flynn offers her a chance to go back to her time with him and she takes it. He parts company with Jesse James but James demands to have his mordern gun. Flynn gives it to him.

It isn’t long before the trio discover Emma’s cabin filled with modern technology. It also doesn’t take James a lot of time to find Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus. He fires his new gun. He kills Grant.

Finally, Wyatt has James cornered. Reeves urges him not to shoot at an injured, unarmed man. He has a choice. However, before Wyatt can make a decision, a bullet lands inside Jesse James. Lucy pulled the trigger!

That’s right: Lucy shot an injured and unarmed Jesse James. She committed her first murder. Needless to say, the Lone Ranger isn’t pleased.

Timeless” Season 1, episode 12 ends with Wyatt meeting Rufus at a bar and asking him to help him steal the Lifeboat in order to prevent his wife’s death.
