KEY POINTS
- Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho are closing in on Lionel Messi's goal stat this season
- Werner and Sancho are the only youngsters in Europe's top five in most goal contributions
- Borussia Dortmund is starting to be concerned about Sancho's departure
Europe’s future superstars Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho are the only youngsters closing in on Lionel Messi’s incredible goal stat this season.
RB Leipzig star Werner has proven that he has the qualities of a superstar. The German youngster emerged in Bundesliga as a notable striker, but in recent seasons, Werner has developed into a relentless goal scorer, giving the last shoulder of defenders a headache with his pace.
While scoring is Werner’s claim to fame, his ability to create chances for his teammates is also notable. In fact, Football.london reported that only the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has managed to top Werner’s impressive goals and assists tally.
Werner's 26 goals and eight assists in the league this season landed him in second place in the most goals contributions list. Tallying an impressive total of 34, Werner ties Europe’s longtime goal scorers, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Lazio’s Ciro Immobile. The only other youngster who made the top five aside from Werner was Borussia Dortmund’s Sancho, who is just trailing behind by one with 33.
Most goal contributions - Europe's top five Leagues (2019/20)
1. Messi - 35
2. Werner - 34
3. Lewandowski - 34
4. Immobile - 34
5. Sancho – 33
Indeed, Werner continues to show that Premier League giants Chelsea did not waste money in signing him. ESPN recently reported that Chelsea and Werner have finally agreed to a deal with a reported fee of around $59 million.
After officially joining the Blues, Werner addressed the fans and vowed to play a role in the club’s aim for future success.
"I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea; it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us," Werner said.
Much like Werner, Sancho is also a top prospect in the German league. Manchester United has been openly courting the 20-year-old and has reportedly made various offers in recent months. But despite the strong interest, Sancho staying in Dortmund still prevails as the narrative of the pursuit.
However, a recent report from Daily Mail claimed that the German side is now “concerned” about the transfer talks surrounding Sancho. Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc emphasized, “It is clear that we are concerned. But I don't want to talk about that now,” hinting at the possibility that the chances of Sancho leaving the club is now increasing.
