Tina Fey Wants Ariana Grande In ‘Mean Girls’ On Broadway
Ariana Grande showed her love for “Mean Girls” in the “Thank U, Next” music video, so could that lead to her starring in the Broadway version? Tina Fey would be happy to let the pop star take over.
“She made a great Regina. I was so honored. It’s a wonderful feeling to know the movie meant so much to her and that she’s keeping it alive for a younger generation,” Fey told the Hollywood Reporter. “And I’m not crazy about stunt casting, but she’s allowed to be stunt-cast in the musical anytime she wants. Call us, Ari.”
Grande made her Broadway debut in “13” in 2008, but she has not returned to the Great White Way since. Could “Mean Girls” be the perfect opportunity?
While Fey would welcome Grande to play one of the teens, she isn’t so sure about the film’s original cast reprising their roles. After all, it has been 15 years since they played teens.
“Honestly, I think most of the actors from the movie are too old to play high school students,” Fey admitted.
However, composer Jeff Richmond added that they could play the adults. “But if Amanda [Seyfried] wanted to come back for six weeks and do the Mrs. George role, I think that might be cool? And not just Amanda — any of them!”
Fey and Richmond, her husband, wrote Broadway’s “Mean Girls” musical together along with lyricist Nell Benjamin. The adaptation of the 2004 film has been a hit since debuting at the August Wilson Theatre last March. For now, the original cast is still taking the stage every night, including last year’s Tony nominees Taylor Louderman (Regina George), Ashley Park (Gretchen Wieners) and Grey Henson (Damian Hubbard).
