KEY POINTS
- Todd Phillips revealed that he is open to making a "Joker" sequel
- He would love to work with Joaquin Phoenix again
- The second movie would need to have the same "real thematic" resonance as the first one
Todd Phillips, the director of the movie “Joker,” has finally admitted that he is open to wokring on a possible sequel to the blockbuster hit and said that he would love to work with Joaquin Phoenix again.
Speaking in an interview with Deadline, the 49-year-old filmmaker discussed many things regarding the movie and also teased his fans that the talks of the sequel might be happening for real. When asked if he is open to doing a sequel to the hit film, the “Hangover” helmer noted that nothing is decided as of late, but he and Phoenix are “open” for a second film.
Talking about the second film in front of a large audience at the DGA Theater in New York, Phillips explained that the topic of making a sequel always comes up when a movie makes more than $1 billion at the box office at a production budget of just $60 million.
However, he admitted that nothing has been decided yet. “Joaquin and I haven’t really decided on it. We are open. I mean, I would love to work with him on anything, quite frankly,” Phillips said.
But Phillips also made it clear that he would only work on a sequel if the movie would have a “real thematic” resonance as the first one because the reality of childhood trauma and every other thing made the film work for him and Warner Bros.
“We would have to have something that had an equal thematic resonance,” Phillips said.
“Joker” became a massive success for Phillips and Warner Bros. The movie became the first-ever R-rated movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office. The most impressive feat about the earnings that the movie has is that it has not been released in China.
The movie also became the most profitable comic-book movie of all-time and made almost 15 times more than its production cost.
The film is also creating a lot of buzz before the nominations of the upcoming Academy Awards are revealed this January. After being recognized as one of the top 10 movies of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI), the movie was nominated for seven Critics’ Choice Awards, including Best Picture.
The film also nabbed four Golden Globes noms, including a Best Director nod for Phillips.
