An 18-month-old boy was reported dead after a minivan driven by his mother drowned into a pond inside a golf course in South Salt Lake, Utah.

The South Salt Lake Police, after receiving reports about a vehicle being driven erratically on the golf course, responded to the Golf The Round golf course along 3300 South and 700 West in South Salt Lake at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Sunday (June 7).

The responding officers found 28-year-old Brittanie Mae Miloshevsky lying unconscious on the grass, and also located a completely submerged car in the nearby pond.

The deputies were alerted to an emergency situation when Miloshevsky told the officers her child was still inside the car.

According to a spokesperson from the Salt Lake Police, officers dove in multiple times before breaking the rear window of the vehicle and retrieving the toddler who was strapped to the seat.

"The officers have to dive in multiple times. There are two officers that go in, dive in, to extract that child out of that vehicle," Danielle Croyle, with South Salt Lake Police, told local media.

According to the affidavit, “The child was submerged for a substantial period of time in cold water.”

“(Miloshevsky’s) clothing is completely soaked with water and it appears she was in the vehicle at the time it went into the water,” the affidavit stated.

The child was rushed to Primary Children’s Hospital in a critical condition, and was later pronounced dead.

The car was pulled out by a tow truck at around 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Police had barricaded the scene and had closed down westbound traffic along 3300 South for hours as they cleared the scene.

Miloshevsky was taken into custody, and was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. She is facing numerous charges, including driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury, child abuse, child endangerment, and criminal mischief. The initially charged child abuse count was later revoked and upgraded into child abuse homicide.

The case is under investigation and the authorities are fact-checking into reports that Miloshevsky was joyriding on the golf course with her son when she accidentally drove into the retention pond.
