Police claimed that a two-year-old child died at the hospital after being bitten by a Pit Bull.

Detective Misty Holley with the Portsmouth Police Department stated emergency dispatchers got a call concerning a dog bite just after 2 pm that day.

When the officers got to the scene of the incident in Church-land, they found the toddler with critical injuries. The medics then took the child to the hospital, where the child succumbed to injuries.

The police claim the pit bull is a family dog. Authorities are currently working with animal control to determine the cause of the attack. Detective Holley says their major crimes unit is working on the matter.

The one-year-old dog was surrendered to animal control officers and set in a ten-day mandatory quarantine.

Relevant authorities are also working on evaluating if anyone is going to be charged in the case.

Some of the neighbors living on Darby Close did not want to speak on camera, but they did express their grief concerning the death of the toddler and extended their condolences to the family. One woman stated the family had just moved into the area this past weekend.

There was a social media post for an online fundraiser, where the organizer identified as a family member. They described the girl who died as a ball of energy. She was also intelligent and sassy.

It is not the only incident, though, which has occurred in recent days involving a dog and a child. A Prince George County police officer shot a dog on Tuesday after it attacked a child and then charged at the officers and nearby bystanders.

The 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries following the attack at 5.30 pm at Old Colony Drive.

When the officers came upon the scene, the dog had been restrained by its owner. Lamar Robinson’s a spokesperson for the police department claimed that it broke free again and could not be subdued with pepper spray. That is when the police opted to fire on the animal though they did not kill it.

The dog has since been placed in the custody of the county animal services following the incident.

The condition of the dog is not yet known as this time, and no information was released concerning the breed. It was lucky, though, that the child escaped with his life.
