A case of murder was registered after the body of a toddler was found in his neighbor’s washing machine in the Indian state of Punjab on Tuesday evening.

Police said the victim, identified as two-year-old Adhiraj, went to a neighbor’s home along with his elder brother and another girl from the neighborhood Sunday afternoon. The victim’s family started searching for him after he did not return home with his elder brother. When his family couldn’t find him anywhere, they immediately alerted the police.

During investigation, police checked the CCTV footage which showed the three children entering Manpreet Kaur’s home Sunday afternoon. However, only two of them came out of the home. Police immediately searched Kaur’s home and found the toddler’s body lying under clothes in the washing machine. The body was sent for autopsy to know the cause of death.

“There were no injury marks on the body. We still do not know how Adhiraj died,” a relative of the victim said.

Meanwhile, police said the investigation was at a very preliminary stage and that five people were under their radar in connection with the case.

“The cause of the death would be known only after the post-mortem examination report. We have rounded up the neighbors and are recording their statements,” police said.
