Tom Brady, New England Patriots Haven't Made Progress Toward Contract, Quarterback Likely Leaving
Tom Brady can officially become a free agent next week. No one seems to know for sure what the quarterback will do, but the chances of Brady signing with a new team for the 2020 NFL season remain strong.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on the latest episode of his podcast Monday that Brady and the Patriots “haven’t made any progress toward a deal” that would keep the six-time Super Bowl champion in New England. Schefter agreed with insider Jeff Darlington that it’s more likely than not that Brady will go elsewhere in free agency.
Darlington made headlines two weeks ago when he said on “Get Up” that he’d be stunned if Brady returns to New England. He pegged the Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders as teams that might have the best chance to sign the 42-year-old.
Oddsmakers still make the Patriots odds-on favorites to sign Brady.
“I do have one bit of scoop for us,” former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said on Sirius XM NFL Radio's “Opening Drive”. “I've been texting with Tommy. I don't [usually] pass along these conversations, but one thing he told me -- 'Nobody knows anything. So anyone who is telling you they know, they don't know.'”
The Los Angeles Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are considered to be potential players for Brady. Los Angeles has already parted ways with Philip Rivers. It’s still unknown what Tampa Bay will do with Jameis Winton, who is unsigned but could be hit with the franchise tag.
It’s been speculated that the San Francisco 49ers could go after Brady. The veteran might have an interest in joining the NFC champs. San Francisco will most likely move forward with Jimmy Garoppolo as its starting quarterback.
Brady had 4,057 passing yards, 24 touchdown passes, eight interceptions and an 88.0 passer rating in the 2019 season. New England went 12-4 before losing at home in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
