“These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands,” Brady, 44, wrote on Twitter. “That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa.”
Prior to announcing his retirement, Brady was not a free agent and was under contract with the Buccaneers for one more season.
He is slated to make over $27.27 million this year under his new contract with the Buccaneers, according to Spotrac.
The quarterback's cap hit for the 2022 NFL season is $20.27 million but carries a dead cap hit of $15 million, Fansided noted.
Brady spent his first 20 NFL seasons with the New England Patriots, leading the franchise to six Super Bowls. He transferred from his longtime home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 and won his seventh Super Bowl ring with the team last year.
Across more than two decades in the NFL, the three-time MVP made about $293 million in salary and bonuses, according to Spotrac.
When he was with the Patriots, Brady earned $230 million between 2000 and 2019. During this period, he also made an additional $100 million from various endorsements.
