Roger Federer is one of the most decorated athletes the world has ever seen. In his generation, he has broken multiple records and has hoisted up countless of championship trophies. He’s currently ahead of the Grand Slam count with 20 and is seeking to continue to add more to that. While he’s out for the next few months as he recovers from knee surgery, the 38-year-old is looking forward to his return to the grass court.
His longevity is one of the most impressive traits of Federer. Aside from his immeasurable skill, elite footwork and immense mental stability, the Swiss star has been relevant since the turn of the millennium. He was a rising star in the early 2000s and his performance in the 2001 Wimbledon tournament sealed Federer as the star we know today.
He made a statement in his matchup against multiple-time Grand Slam Champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round of that year’s tournament. Federer beat Sampras in a classic five-set duel, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5.
Fast-forward to the current era and Federer is still leading the charge amongst the new stars of the sport. He’s still seeded fourth in the world and is still a favored champion in every Major he’s in.
Hall Of Fame legend John McEnroe likens Federer to NFL star Tom Brady’s career. Per Tennis.com, the tennis legend shared his amusement on how the two have been performing at the top of their game for the longest time. “I mean, how they keep doing it would be the first thing at their age. It's phenomenal, right? I mean, how in the world are these guys still playing at such a high level?”
Brady is one of the most successful quarterbacks in the league – considering he’s a six-time Super Bowl winner, four-time Super Bowl MVP and a three-time NFL MVP. These accomplishments mean so much more considering that Brady was selected in the sixth round, 199th pick of the 2000 NFL Draft.
The six-foot-four late pick has proven all the doubters wrong and has withstood the test of time. He has achieved so much in his career and yet he’s still going strong as a prominent figure in American Football.
