Tom Hanks Coronavirus Update: Actor, Wife Rita Wilson Contracted Disease Outside Australia, Officials Say

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson contracted coronavirus outside Australia.

The “Cast Away” actor announced on Twitter that he and his wife Wilson are in Australia and were tested for the coronavirus after they felt a bit tired and had colds and body aches. He confessed that the results were positive.

Officials from Queensland released a statement after Hanks’ post on social media revealing where the couple likely contracted the virus. They did not mention Hanks and Wilson’s names specifically but in their announcement they said that the state’s new patients are non-contact cases and could have “contracted the illness outside Australia and traveled to Queensland with the virus,” so they were probably infected in the United States or while traveling to Australia, Nine.com.au reported.

Hanks and Wilson were in Australia over a week before they were diagnosed with COVID-19. They arrived in the Land Down Under in January for a film’s pre-production. However, the couple returned to the U.S. for the Academy Awards in February. At present, Hanks and Wilson are spending 14 days in isolation in a Gold Coast hospital.

Hanks and Wilson are working with the officials to trace their whereabouts in Australia and notify those who came in contact with them. A few days ago, Wilson shared a snap of her on Instagram standing outside at the Opera House where she performed. She also made several promo appearances.

“Today Extra” host David Campbell announced that he will get himself tested because he interviewed Wilson earlier in the week. Meanwhile, the production of Hanks’ film has been shut down until further notice.

Hanks and Wilson’s son Chet Hanks addressed the issue on Instagram. According to him, his parents are fine and are “not even that sick.” He added that both were neither worried about the future and are going through the necessary health precautions.

Hanks’ son with ex-wife Samantha Lewes Colin Hanks also gave an update on his dad and stepmom’s condition on social media. He said that they were grateful for the outpouring support the family received and added, “My parents are receiving excellent care in Australia and are doing well (and in good spirits) given the circumstances.”
