KEY POINTS

  • Tomori likely to be loaned to Everton
  • Tomori has better chances of playing with Toffees
  • Tomori likely to go down in order with Thiago Silva arrival

Fikayo Tomori had a fine showing last season but somehow sputtered towards the end. Now, the Blues defender could be well off joining another club after falling in the pecking order. There are now suggestions that the 22-year-old could be loaned to Everton FC.

According to Sky Sports, The Toffees are closing in on a loan deal to acquire Tomori. The 22-year-old was also linked to a possible move to Rennes but it appears Everton has ramped up its bid. The Toffees had their eye on Gabriel Magalhaes but the Brazilian ended up joining Arsenal FC.

The future of Tomori got even blurrier when the Blues signed Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain. He was not used towards the end of Chelsea's campaign and is expected to be pushed down further with the Blues' new acquisition.

Regardless, Tomori could still be of use to other clubs. He made 23 appearances for the Blues, a season after he was named the Derby County's Player of the Season while on loan. He is under contract until 2024 but the influx of new talent holds no guarantees he can regain his slot next season, Goal reported.

For Everton, the acquisition of Tomori makes sense. Carlo Ancelotti is no stranger when it comes to interest in Tomori, someone he had monitored since last season. However, the 22-year-old will still have to prove his worth as he battles Yerry Mina, Michael Keanne and Mason Holgate for a starting spot.

If the deal does get done, Tomori would become the latest player added to Everton. The last player that the Toffees added was James Rodriguez and Allan. Rodriguez was secured from Real Madrid for roughly $26 million. The signing will also be the 29-year-old's third reunion with Ancelotti.

Ancelotti has been focusing on strengthening his defensive mix, an area where Everton struggled last season. Tomori could help out in that aspect, his third loan spell out of Stamford Bridge.

It remains to be seen if the deal will push through before The Toffees face Tottenham this weekend. Everton is hoping to perform better after finishing 12th last season.
