The sport of pro wrestling has been experiencing a recent uptick in pop culture thanks to the arrival of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) that has been going toe-to-toe with WWE.
Despite AEW’s success, former WCW president and WWE personnel Eric Bischoff took shots at the company for signing CM Punk, whom he deems to have been a net negative for them.
AEW President Tony Khan took offense to Bischoff’s words and decided to fire back with his own statement.
“He just started saying some pretty negative stuff around the time CM Punk came in and I didn’t think it was really fair and he’s talked about investments and financial stuff, but he doesn’t really understand our financials,” Khan told The Corner Podcast.
Punk’s return to the ring was an amazing sight to behold for everyone in the pro wrestling community as it marked the end of his seven-year hiatus from the sport.
Since that time, the former two-time WWE Champion has become the AEW World Champion after defeating Adam “Hangman” Page at AEW Double or Nothing last May 29.
For Bischoff to say that Punk is a financial flop for AEW is a disservice to the drawing power that he still has to his name after he set a new record for having the highest-selling design in Pro Wrestling Tees’ history in just 72 hours.
It beat out the record that was previously held by the iconic Bone Soldier Bullet Club shirt, which has been at the top spot for the past seven years.
Khan later mentioned that if he saw Bischoff, he would remain cordial with him as the latter had made appearances in AEW before
“I haven’t spoken a bad word to him because we haven’t talked in a while, but I liked Eric when we talked and I’ve said this before, if I saw him right now, I think we’d probably shake hands and talk,” he stressed.
Bischoff also criticized AEW for its supposed lackluster storytelling, but the fact remains that the promotion is presenting the hottest product in the industry today after announcing its crossover show entitled Forbidden Door with New Japan Pro Wrestling, which will be happening on June 26 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
