The Magnetic Timeline feature offers you an exceptionally fluid, flexible way to edit your videos. The feature gives you visual simplicity that reveals powerfully professional tools. Now you can accumulate shots with ease and the clips will “magnetically” delete any unwanted gaps in the timeline. Clips, now, will also move out of the way to avoid collisions and synchronization problems. Built-in interactive animations will also help you with details about what’s happening in the timeline while you work.

This feature allows your media to organize itself. The new FCP X significantly speeds up your media by examining your source material in the background while you edit. The Content Auto-Analysis scans the footages and creates metadata based on the way you would work. The feature also comes with range-based tags for media attributes along with camera data and shot type. You can use the tags to sort, filter and search your clips. The Content Auto-Analysis also executes processor-intensive analysis ahead of time for image stabilization, corrections for rolling shutter distortion, color balance, and repairs for typical audio problems. Later you can use these features in real time while you edit.

Smart Collections has been developed to help you organize clips in multiple ways without moving or copying files as such. You can create a search using any combination of metadata and keywords, and later save it as a Smart Collection. Final Cut Pro will automatically add new items to a Smart Collection when there is a match with the fields you’ve selected. The Content Auto-Analysis develops Smart Collections for you using key attributes such as shot type or the number of people in the shot. You can also assign shots as Favorites or Rejects and include those standards as you sort, filter, search, and create Smart Collections.

You can also use Auditions to create multiple versions of your project for different deliverables and venues. It’s easy to create an Audition as you can simply drag shots of any length to the same place in the timeline and click “Add to Audition.” The Magnetic Timeline will keep everything in sync while you try out different shots.

Final Cut Pro will automatically create a Clip Connection when you drag a secondary element to the timeline. You can now do a fast assembly or precise trimming with confidence as you will know that Clip Connections keep everything together. It is now specifically easy to reorganize your story as you work as you can move a section of your project in a single step. Clear visual connections also make it easy to hand off a project to another editor or to resume editing at a later date.

Now you can make your searches even more precise by developing your own set of keywords and assigning them to clip ranges. Easy skimming and keyboard shortcuts will let you work faster. The List view will show the metadata for a clip as you skim to add new keywords. You can also use the Filmstrip view to see your previous footage instantly and you won’t have to sort through obscure clip names. There is also the option of using the range-based keywords in combination with rich metadata from Content Auto-Analysis to find a shot with a few keystrokes. It is considered as a big improvement over old-fashioned static bins.
