  • Field battles can be easily won with dragons and other elite units

The proud and stalwart High Elves of Ulthuan may just be the best faction to play for those who are new to “Total War: Warhammer 2.” Their simple-yet-effective armies are powerful enough to stand toe-to-toe even against the most dangerous of foes without giving their commanders any major headaches on all fronts.

Here’s a short overview of the High Elf armies and their units as well as some tips on how to use them effectively.

High Elf Units Overview

High Elf armies are typically composed of spearmen, archers, cavalry, a few units of artillery and possibly a powerful flying monster like a dragon or a phoenix. Unlike the Empire, High Elves don’t have much unit variety for players to experiment with, but each unit comes with great base stats.

The main weakness of the High Elves is their low model counts. While each unit is strong, their overall numbers are relatively few compared to other factions. This means they may get overwhelmed through sheer numbers, especially against factions like the Skaven and the Orks.

High Elf Army Compositions

Spearmen comprise the brunt of the High Elf frontlines; these soldiers boast sturdy defensive stats and decent damage against infantry and cavalry. They primarily hold the line while other units like Swordmasters of Hoeth, Rangers and White Lions of Chrace decimate enemy troops with their superior damage stats, so make sure to keep some of these units handy.

Meanwhile, Archers serve as the primary ranged damage dealers of an elven army. They won’t hold their own in melee, so keep some units in reserve to protect their flanks.

As for flanking units, players can pick between shock cavalry or a variety of monsters. Ellyrian Reavers and Silver Helms are great for charging the backs of the enemy frontline while monsters like Great Eagles, Phoenixes and Dragons can be used to devastate enemies with spells and charge attacks.

Battle Tips

  • Flank a shield wall with White Lions, Phoenix Guards, or Swordmasters so they can have easy access to the enemy
  • Always cycle-charge shock cavalry to maintain maximum performance
  • High Elf armies are great for defensive playstyles centered around protecting archers and artillery
  • In the campaign mode, have one or two dragon-mounted lords in an army for maximum carnage
