Tottenham Rumors: Spurs Reconsider Signing Former Footballer Of The Year
KEY POINTS
- Tottenham is looking to secure a deal for Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar
- The Spurs have already pursued Skriniar last summer
- Manchester United and Chelsea are also interested in the Serie A defender
Tottenham is taking a second look at a world-class target.
Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar is considered as one of the best center-backs of his generation. Naturally a defender, he can also function as an attacker and has already scored three goals this season for Nerazzurri.
The 2019 Slovakian Footballer of the Year’s fine form didn’t go unnoticed as his former suitor Tottenham is now reconsidering a move for him this summer, Football.london reported.
According to the report, the Spurs have always been admirers of Skriniar, but the player’s price tag is hindering the North London-based outfit from extending a bid.
It can be recalled that Tottenham was heavily linked to the 26-year-old last summer, but the courtship eventually fell apart. Instead, Jose Mourinho’s side signed a cheaper alternative center-back in Joe Rodon from Swansea.
Skriniar’s current value is around the region of €55 million ($64.7 million). Moreover, his price tag is not likely to drop anytime soon given his impressive showing in the Italian top-flight this season.
Aside from his previous accolades, Skriniar is ranked as the ninth best center-back in the world, according to Transfermarkt.
Apart from the money, another potential obstacle for Tottenham is the rumored interest from rivaling English Prmier League clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea, Italian outlet FC Inter News reported.
The aforementioned clubs are known for their capability to splurge on signings, having been two of the Premier Leage teams that have sealed multi-million deals in the past transfer windows.
Since leaving Sampdoria for Inter Milan in the summer of 2017, Skriniar has been a key figure for the Italian side. Along with Lautaro Martinez, he made Nerazzurri serious Serie A title contenders in the previous seasons.
However, the Slovakian is starting to become more and more disappointed with his team’s performance, particularly after the recent back-to-back draws against Cyprus and Malta.
Despite being linked to a move away from Antonio Conte’s side, Skriniar remained focus on bringing home the silverware this year.
“I realize what’s expected of me, I have to take the responsibility that is in my hands,” Skriniar said at a press conference. “Either verbally or on the pitch. We all have to do more, me first. But above all, this work must be demonstrated by the performances on the pitch.”
“We only have two points in two games, and we must get out."
