Toyota Releases First EV With bZ4X: See The New bZ Series Electric SUV
Toyota (TM) has introduced a new all-electric vehicle line with the launch of the bZ4X SUV – the first model within its new bZ series.
The electric SUV will launch in all regions around mid-2022 and is the first of seven models to be introduced within the bZ series by 2025, Toyota said.
The automaker plans to develop a full lineup of electrified vehicles, including HEVs, PHEVs, BEVs, and FCEVs to give consumers a wide range of choices.
“We aim to gain acceptance from many customers in regions with great demand for BEVs and plentiful supply of electricity from renewable energy, such as China, the U.S., Europe, and Japan,” the company said in a statement.
The bZ4X has a dedicated BEV platform that was jointly developed with Subaru, featuring a low center of gravity and greater rigidity for enhanced off-road and intuitive driving performance, Toyota said.
The battery pack is situated under the floor of the vehicle for a compact fit and has a power output of 150 kW and 160 kW in the 4WD configuration.
The SUV is capable of charging to 80% in 30 minutes and is compatible with high-output chargers worldwide. It can be equipped with solar panels to charge the vehicle as well.
The cruising range on a full charge is about 500 km (310 miles), or 460 km (285 miles) in the 4WD model, according to the automaker.
Interior elements include soundproofing glass and wind-noise reduction for a quieter ride. A roomier cabin was also integrated, along with added legroom and upholstered instrument panel. A navigation system, over-the-air updates, and digital keys are also featured on the EV.
A steer-by-wire system is available in some bZ4X models, as there is no mechanical connection from the steering wheel to tires. This Yoke-style steering reduces the burden on the driver when making a U-turn, garage parking, or on winding roads as the operator feels the steering angle of the tires by controlling the steering torque independently.
The exterior of the bZ4X has a sleek, modern design with a long wheelbase. A hammerhead, shark-like shape runs from the hood to the top of the headlights creating a unique look to the SUV, Toyota said.
As of Friday at 11:18 p.m. ET, shares of Toyota were trading at $175.96, down 52 cents, or 0.30%.
