Toys R Us Christmas Eve Store Hours 2013: Stores To Stay Open 87 Straight Hours For Last-Minute Shoppers
Last-minute minute shopping—especially for that special toy the kid in your life has been coveting—can be a pain as the holidays creep up, but Toys R Us is on your side, procrastinators.
The Wayne, N.J.-based toy giant announced it will extend its Christmas Eve store hours to remain open for 87 hours straight nationwide. Many stores will stay open from 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 through 9.m. Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 24.
The Toys R Us in New York City’s Times Square will remain open for 566 consecutive hours, having already been open around the clock since Dec. 1 at 8 a.m. The megastore will remain open until 10 p.m. Dec. 24.
The company chose to extend their Christmas store hours in an effort to appeal to last-minute shoppers, adding deals and discounts to further tempt shoppers. Along with price-matching bargains, Toys R Us will have sales on toys like the Furby Boom for $40 and more. Some toys will even be 50 percent off or have buy-one-get-one-free deals until closing on Christmas Eve on various items.
“With only eight shopping days remaining until Christmas, we are offering customers extended, uninterrupted time in stores, providing them the opportunity to shop whenever is most convenient for them – whether early in the morning or late at night,” Toys R Us Executive Vice President Troy Rice said in a statement. “Gift-givers have the greatest chance of crossing off everything on their child’s wish list with ease at Toys R Us.”
This isn’t the first time Toys R Us extended its store hours ahead of Christmas to give last-minute shoppers extra time to buy gifts. Last year, Toys R Us stayed open for 88 hours straight with hours similar to this year, but closing at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. In 2011, most stores stayed open for 112 hours straight thorough 10 p.m.
Other retailers have followed suit in keeping stores open longer for last-minute holiday shopping. Kohl’s store hours will be 6 a.m. Dec. 20 through 6 p.m. Christmas Eve; Kmart will open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Dec. 24, which is six more hours than last year; Target’s store hours will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. Dec. 24, which varies by location; and Walmart superstores will close at 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) released a report declaring the last weekend before Christmas to be busier than ever thanks to a late Thanksgiving shortening the holiday shopping season.
"There's no question that the shortened holiday season has put both retailers and consumers in a rush to make the most out of the time that's left before the big day," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said in a statement. “Retailers will do their best to pull in those final dollars with unique offerings for their in-store, online and mobile shoppers.”
For online shoppers, Toys R Us said orders placed by 9 a.m. PST on Dec. 23 purchased with the express shipping option will have guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve. Customers who shop later online can also choose pick items up in stores by 4 p.m. Dec. 24.
