Seven people were hospitalized Wednesday evening after a steam-powered train derailed at an amusement park in Stone County, Missouri.
Three passenger cars of the Frisco Silver Dollar Line at Silver Dollar City park reportedly toppled to the sides at around 6:10 p.m.
"Of course, when you have a call come in with that description, you immediately think the worst," Stone County emergency management director Tom Martin told NBC News. "Fortunately, it wasn't."
Ambulances from multiple districts were dispatched to the scene after a passenger called 911. Six people were admitted to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The rest of the passengers were picked up via a shuttle bus near the tracks.
A video of the toppled train was shared on Twitter by a KOLR10 anchor.
The train that derailed offers a leisurely 20-minute ride around the park, briefly interrupted by a prank robbery attempt, according to their website.
The ride was full when it toppled. Passengers had to smash the windows to climb out of the toppled cars. A man suffered lower back issues, and another lady's face was bleeding after her glasses smashed her face, OzarksFirst reported.
The theme park acknowledged the tragedy and issued a statement.
"Silver Dollar City confirms that earlier this evening, sections of the Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train derailed from the track. Onsite paramedics provided emergency care until first responders arrived. Six guests and one employee have been transported by ambulance to nearby medical facilities," the park's update on Twitter read.
"At this time, we are wholeheartedly focused on providing support for guests and team members in partnership with Stone County first responders. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available," they said.
The park is owned and operated by Herschend Family Entertainment. Along with its parent company Herschend Enterprises, the organization is considered to be the country's largest family-owned themed attractions corporation. Their portfolio includes Dollywood Parks & Resorts, Adventure Aquarium, and Kentucky Kingdom amongst other attractions in North America and British Columbia.
In an incident reported in July, a 14-year-old died and multiple were injured after a roller coaster ride derailed at a popular Danish amusement park. The ride that derailed is the Cobraen roller coaster which goes up to 82 feet high at about 44 mph. The incident occurred at the Tivoli Friheden amusement park in Aarhus city in central Denmark.
