Transfer News: Manchester United Could Solidify Back Four With French Midfielder
KEY POINTS
- Manchester United could boost its back four by adding Raphael Varane
- Varane may consider leaving Santiago Bernabeu after his contract expires
- The Red Devils have eyes on several midfielders other than Varane
Manchester United has been successful so far this summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have taken in a couple of notable names, but they are unlikely to stop there.
The name of Raphael Varane has been suggested as another possible target, someone who could further boost the back four of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But this is on the premise that the French midfielder leaves Santiago Bernabeu.
So far, the Red Devils have already signed Tom Heaton via free transfer. There is also Jadon Sancho reportedly coming in.
Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund have agreed to a £72.9 million ($100.76 million) deal for Sancho last Thursday, something that finally went down after they fell short last season.
While Heaton and Sancho are big signings, Manchester United may continue to skim the market–a reason why the name of Varane has come into play.
Former Tottenham and England winger Andros Townsend believes that going after the 28-year-old player would be ideal for the Red Devils when he spoke to talkSport.
“They have a lot of forward options and Jadon Sancho will give them another option but Varane, if he does come in, will solidify the back four,” Townsend stated. “He’s big, he’s strong, he is quick and I definitely think the Varane one takes them closer to where they want to be.”
Considering that Varane has a year left in his current deal with Real Madrid, seeing him leave Santiago Bernabeu is possible.
Seen as one of the best defenders in Europe today, he could be a perfect complement to Harry Maguire in defense.
With Varane having experience in both clubs and at the international level, he is expected to adjust well to the English Premier League style of play.
If not Varane, there are other names that Solskjaer could target. That list includes Nikola Milenkovic, Pau Torres, Jules Kounde and Cristian Romero.
