KEY POINTS

  • Antonio Conte has reportedly arrived in London to finalize his deal with Tottenham
  • His incredible resume is believed to be the catalyst for enticing Harry Kane to stay
  • Kane is off to a very slow start this season, scoring only one goal thus far

Former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is believed to be the catalyst that will help frustrated Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane remain with the club.

That is according to Jason Pettigrove of Caught Offside, who cited that Conte has been a bringer of silverware everywhere he goes and enforces a style of football that the North London faithful will “surely enjoy.”

For those unfamiliar with Conte’s work, the best example of it would be during his two-year stint with Chelsea.

In April 2016, the hard-nosed tactician inherited a Chelsea squad that was coming off a demoralizing 2015-16 season with Jose Mourinho despite winning the title the year prior.

That season saw the dismissal of Mourinho in December after leading the club to 16th place by that time, with the previous season’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year winner Eden Hazard failing to register a single league goal until late April.

The club finished at 10th place, setting a then-record lowest finish for an English Premier League titleholder.

It was at this time when Conte was brought in to help right the ship at Stamford Bridge.

In just one year, the Italian manager helped Chelsea win its second title in three years using mainly the same players that had won the title in 2014-15 but also had the benefit of adding then 26-year-old midfielder N’Golo Kante from Leicester City.

After scoring only four goals across 25 appearances in Mourinho’s final season, Hazard returned to prime form under Conte, scoring 16 goals in 36 Premier League games.

Even center-forward Diego Costa had a resurgent season with the new manager, upping his scoring total in 2016-17 to 20 goals and seven assists.

Conte breathed new life into a Chelsea squad that had embarrassed themselves the year prior.

However, Conte will be getting a far-less superior squad than what he had with Chelsea then.

Kane and South Korea’s Son Heung-min are their two most recognizable names, with no one else coming close.

With regards to Kane, his chances of winning his first piece of silverware will drastically go up, should his side go after Conte.

The 52-year-old Italian has a habit of making diamonds appear out of nowhere as evidenced by his management of Costa and has the potential to do so with Kane as the forward has struggled this season with only one Premier League goal to his name.

Bringing the England striker back to form will be Conte’s No. 1 priority and the upgrade of the roster can follow later.

If Tottenham owner Daniel Levy gets Conte, he will now have to put everything on the line to keep him and Kane happy by providing them with talent that can compete for a Premier League title.
