KEY POINTS

  • Niklas Sule's representatives reportedly met with Newcastle United a few weeks ago
  • New information states that Sule's interest in the transfer is mutual
  • His place at Bayern Munich remains stable, but a move might be more beneficial

Bayern Munich’s ever-reliable center-back Niklas Sule is reportedly interested in moving to the English Premier League under Newcastle United.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that the new Saudi Arabia-based owners of the Magpies are looking into a complete reworking of the roster and the German international defender is among one of their top targets.

But now it seems that the feeling is mutual, according to Sport Bild’s Christian Falk.

In a tweet, Falk confirmed that talks have been held between both sides three weeks ago, around the same time that the rumored interest of Newcastle United came about, and that Sule is interested in the “project”.

The 26-year-old’s name has been making its rounds in the transfer rumor mill as murmurs floated around that Bayern Munich is prepared to sign Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger as a replacement for him.

Among the parties involved, Bayern Munich is most at risk since Sule’s contract is expiring in the summer of 2022, and losing him on a free transfer should definitely not be on their checklist.

Understandably, a player of Sule’s caliber would attract more high-paying clubs than Bayern Munich so securing him to an extension should be a priority.

Sule blossomed into the top-tier defender that he is now since joining Bayern Munich from Hoffenheim on a transfer fee of £18 million ($24.5 million).

However, his value has taken a slight dip as both Lucas Hernandez and Dayot Upamecano are slowly getting the upper hand on him in terms of matchday performances.

It also does not help his case with the young Chris Richards developing very well too.

Sule’s position at Bayern Munich looks to be secure for now as his track record of high IQ defensive plays, technical skills and athleticism have kept him on the field as a major piece for the German side’s defense.

A move to Newcastle would make sense for Sule as the club’s sudden injection of cash might force Bayern Munich into a sale and give him a big payday, a win-win situation either way.
