Transfer Rumors: Leeds United Could Make Renewed Push For Huddersfield Town Midfielder
KEY POINTS
- Leeds United could make a renewed chase for Lewis O’Brien of Huddersfield Town in January
- Marcelo Bielsa may consider O’Brien if current players don’t perform well until the January transfer window
- Leeds United can get Larry O’Brien if they meet the $13.5 million-release clause
Leeds Unite could be an active club in the January transfer window, and one potential target could be Lewis O’Brien of Huddersfield Town AFC.
It won’t be the first time the Whites have tried to lure the 23-year-old midfielder. According to Huddersfield owner Phil Hodgkinson, Leeds did make a bid for the English footballer.
However, the actual figures were not divulged. There are claims that it was around £13 million ($17.5 million).
Regardless, that deal for O’Brien never materialized with Huddersfield rejecting the proposal because they wanted something more, Leeds Live reported.
But with murmurs that O'Brien is contemplating an exit from John Smith’s Stadium, a refreshed pursuit is speculated.
But for the Whites to be successful, they would need to meet the £10 million ($13.5 million) release clause to successfully pry O’Brien from Huddersfield per reports.
Considering Leeds United has been feeling the pinch of not signing a new midfielder, a renewed chase for Lewis O’Brien would make sense.
So far, they have turned to Mateusz Klich or Stuart Dallas, but neither of the two has helped their cause.
Hence, meeting the reported release clause is already lower than the first alleged pitch, an investment that could help address the Whites’ midfield woes.
However, any personnel movement by Leeds United hinges on what Marcelo Bielsa decides.
Dallas has been showing some signs of life, and any decision could be swayed depending on how the club performs from now until the January transfer window.
In addition, Dallas had a credible showing against Norwich last weekend and Adam Forshaw appears to be pushing himself to help the Whites.
Another option for Bielsa is the case of Lewis Michael Bate. The 19-year-old has been giving a good account of himself since arriving at Elland Road last summer.
So right now, Bielsa is expected to assess his current crop of players before considering any move.
If players like Dallas, Klich, Forshaw and Bate are not enough, it would not come as a surprise to see them trying to lure in O’Brien from Huddersfield Town.
