Transfer Rumors: Manchester United Blocked This Player's Loan Move On Deadline Day
KEY POINTS
- Angel Gomes has been associated with Man Utd since he was six
- He wanted to move to another Premier League side on a loan
- The club is still in discussions with Gomes' representatives regarding his Man Utd future
Manchester United reportedly blocked youngster Angel Gomes’ loan move on the transfer deadline day last month.
Gomes, who plays with the Under-23 side, was in Norwich on Jan. 31. But it is understood that the match got over two hours before the 11 p.m. deadline and the clubs could have proceeded with the signing. The 19-year-old midfielder, whose contract ends in the coming summer, wanted to move on loan to another top-flight English club.
According to Manchester Evening News, Man Utd are at risk of losing the 19-year-old talented player on a free transfer in the summer as he is believed to have rejected their opening offer. While Man Utd remain in discussions with Gomes, a source has revealed that Gomes’ representatives are "underwhelmed" by the club's terms.
Apart from Gomes, Man Utd are set to lose 20-year-old Tahith Chong, who is also on the verge of making an exit on a free transfer.
“We’ve had a lot of discussions with the boys. Obviously, their contracts operate out in the summer season but we want them to stay,” Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said recently in an interview.
He then added that he wants Gomes to play at his full potential and remain a part of the Old Trafford side, considering the midfielder has been a part of their academy since he was six.
“I can’t see a better location for a young lad which is come by way of the ranks in the academy to enjoy 1st group soccer. Both Angel and [Tahith] Chongy have been listed here for quite a few, many decades. We just want them to go on their improvement and ideally they can see that when youthful lads get their chance, they will get extra opportunities,” the Norwegian boss added.
The teenager has played around five matches for Man Utd this season – twice in the league, once in the League Cup and the rest of games in the Europa League.
