- Mesut Ozil has elected to stay on at Emirates Stadium rather than move to another league
- Ozil rejected an offer from Fenerbahce to play in the Turkish Super Lig, a report said
- Mikel Arteta wants Ozil to prove that he deserves to be on the field
Mesut Ozil intends to play out the remainder of his contract with Arsenal F.C., thumbing down a reported offer from a Turkish Super Lig team, Fenerbahce. Despite not seeing action since the restart, Ozil prefers to wait for his chance to return to football action amid the uncertainty over his future at Emirates Stadium.
According to Bild, Ozil rejected an offer from Fenerbahce to play in the Turkish Super Lig. Details were limited. However, it was suggested that part of the reason why the negotiations failed to push through was his weekly wages. Ozil earns roughly $444,000 a week with the Gunners.
Ozil has elected to play out the remainder of his contract with the Gunners. He has 12 months remaining in his current deal. However, the German has yet to play a game since the restart of football action.
But Mikel Arteta said recently that Ozil still has a chance to reclaim his old spot if he proves he can align with the vision of the Gunners.
To date, Ozil is being kept out due to a mysterious back injury. However, the German seemed to rebuff all that when he posted on social media that he was fine and ready to play.
Critics feel that there is something deeper in the situation of Ozil. Along with Matteo Guendouzi, they are two players believed to be in a rift with Arteta. Despite this, the Gunners coach has not completely ruled out a return for either player.
As previously reported, Arteta advised Ozil and Guendouzi to use Granit Xhaka's transformation as a guide. From a controversial player, Xhaka was able to transition and align himself with Arteta's vision. That led to him now being a vital piece in the Gunners, proving to everyone he deserved to stay at Emirates Stadium.
"The challenge with Granit was to convince him that there was still a place for him here, that I had big belief in him and that things can turn around pretty quickly in this industry," Arteta said.
Arteta also explained that this is not limited to Ozil and Guendouzi. He said that all the players need to continue giving their best for the benefit of the club as a whole.
