Dayot Upamecano of RB Leipzig has choices after this season and it appears there are two top destinations for the French midfielder.

However, it appears Bayern Munich has jumped the gun on other clubs.

It is no secret that the 22-year-old has captured the fancy of multiple teams. Aside from Bayern, other clubs linked to the French football player include Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.

However, Der FCB appears to have stepped up in the chase with reports that the club has already had preliminary discussions with Upamecano.

According to Bild, Upamecano’s agents Sascha Breese and Volker Struth were spotted entering the underground car park of the Bayern Munich offices.

It appears that both had a meeting with Bayern, something that sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic practically confirmed. He said that they had a good meeting with Upamecano’s agents on Friday, making Der FCB the leaders in the football player’s chase.

“Of course we are thinking about him,” Salihamidzic said to Sky Germany. “We had a good meeting with his agents yesterday. Let’s see what happens.”

Upamecano is tied to RB Leipzig until 2023. To pry him away from the Red Bull Arena, FCB would need to cough up $52 million for his release.

It seems this is what the French player and his agents have agreed upon to take the next step, possibly this summer, Sport 1 reported.

"The release clause was agreed because the player decided to want to take the next step at some point. It is very likely in the summer," Salihamidzic explained. “Nothing final has been decided yet. The tendency for him to leave the club in the summer is high."

By the looks of it, Bayern will try to negotiate the fee since it is a bit hefty considering the current pandemic conditions. This could have been part of their discussions recently.

But the fact remains that other teams could spend a fortune to get Upamecano to their side. Even if the player agents claim that talks went well with Bayern, it may all boil down to the money game.

The club that can offer the best deal to RBL could be Upamecano’s next stop unless some other factors come into play such as his preference on where to play.
