Travis Scott To Perform At Billboard Music Awards Six Months After Astroworld Tragedy
KEY POINTS
- Diddy revealed he demanded that Travis Scott be included in this year's lineup
- The rapper will perform alongside Ed Sheeran, Megan Thee Stallion, and other stars
- Scott performed at Miami's E11EVEN Club on May 8
Travis Scott is set to perform at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards on May 15. The performance will mark his first awards show performance since the tragedy that took place at the 2021 Astroworld Festival last November.
Billboard announced in a press release on May 9 that Scott will perform alongside other big artists during the event. “Travis Scott, Ed Sheeran, Becky G., and the team-up of Elle King and Miranda Lambert have been added to the performance lineup for the 2022 Billboard Music Awards,” the statement read.
This year’s Billboard Music Awards will be hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs and will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 15, 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Previously, Billboard announced that Megan Thee Stallion, Morgan Wallen, and Red Hot Chili Peppers would also perform at the awards show.
Shortly after the announcement, Diddy took to Instagram to hype up the event and reveal his role in the inclusion of Scott in the lineup. “I made a request, I made a demand,” he said in the video. “I said, ‘My brother Travis Scott has to perform. Diddy is hosting the show—I’m executive producing—he has to perform.’ And NBC said ‘yes.’ So, it’s going down Sunday. Travis Scott will be performing.”
“BREAKING NEWS!!! BREAKING NEWS!!! @TravisScott will be performing at the @BBMAs live this Sunday!,” he captioned his post, before adding the hashtag #BBMAS.
While the BBMA marks Scott’s first major televised performance since the Astroworld tragedy, this is not his first public performance since November. Scott joined the Formula 1 Race Week Celebration in the early hours of May 8 at Miami’s E11EVEN Club, where he took the stage and put on a 45-minute show. The tracks he performed included his biggest hits, “Sicko Mode,” “Goosebumps,” and “Pick Up the Phone.” Back in April, he also gave a surprise performance at the Revolve x Bootsy Bellows party in California.
The Astroworld Festival is a music event founded and run by Scott. Last year’s event ended tragically after a crowd rush that left 10 people dead and more than 200 injured.
