KEY POINTS

  • Liberal California remains a Blue State that will vote for the Democratic Party's presidential candidate in November
  • A new poll shows 66 percent of voters will vote for the Democrat candidate
  • 67 percent disapprove of the overall job Trump is doing as president

If there's one state president Donald Trump is guaranteed to lose on November 3, that state would be California. The solid blue and liberal Sunshine State saw 62 percent of its voters choose Hillary Clinton in 2016. Trump got 32 percent of the popular vote.

Californians still don't like Trump over three years later and the latest Berkeley IGS Poll shows a disapproval rating for Trump almost similar to the percentage of Californians that voted for his 2016 rival.

The Berkeley IGS (Institute of Governmental Studies) Poll taken from Jan. 15 to 21 reveals two in three registered California voters (67 percent) disapprove of the overall job Trump is doing as president. On the other hand, 33 percent approve.

This outcome is statistically unchanged from polls taken two months ago, and two years ago. California voters also disapprove of Trump’s handling of America’s foreign policy following his recent actions against Iran. Sixty-seven percent of voters disapprove of his performance in this area, while 32 percent approve.

As for the upcoming presidential election, the poll shows two in three (66 percent) Californians likely to vote on November 3 won't vote for Trump. Berkeley analysts said this percentage compares to 67 percent of likely voters that held this opinion in the previous poll two months ago. This strongly held opinion means large majorities of those inclined or disinclined to back Trump’s re-election remain unchanged.

Political partisanship is also strong in Democrat-dominated California. Nearly all registered Democrats (95 percent) disapprove of the job Trump is doing, with 86 percent strongly disapproving. In contrast, nine in 10 of the state’s registered Republicans (90 percent) approve of Trump's job. Of this total, 66 percent approve strongly.

The poll shows the same pattern when examining voters’ self-described political ideology. Ninety-eight percent of voters that describe themselves as very liberal in politics disapprove of Trump’s performance. Ninety-six percent of these people disapprove strongly.

On the other hand, 86 percent of voters that describe themselves as very conservative in politics approve of Trump's, with 77 percent approving strongly.

Trump receives his poorest assessments among voters in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area where 79 percent disapprove of him, and Los Angeles County where 73 percent don't like him.

The poll shows large majorities of Californians across all age, gender and racial lines disapprove of Trump’s performance. Women, younger voters and ethnic voters hold the most negative views of Trump.
