Former President Donald Trump’s supporters have started using the fatal “Rust” set shooting to mock veteran actor Alec Baldwin, who parodied the former president for years on “Saturday Night Live.” Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., is among the people who have used social media to mock the actor.
On Instagram, Trump Jr. posted a meme reading, “Let’s all watch Alec Baldwin blame the gun.” The photo was captioned: “It’s only a matter of time.”
In an Instagram post last week, Trump Jr. posted another meme showing his father appearing to mimic how to hold a long gun. “For those who are out there doing the fake sanctimony about leaving Alec Baldwin alone let’s all remember that Alec Baldwin would be the first person pissing on everyone’s grave if the shoes were on the other foot. Screw him!” he wrote on the caption.
Trump Jr. has also started selling T-shirts on his website that include the tagline “guns don’t kill people Alec Baldwin kills people.”
Other people have also been posting on social media to further ridicule the “Rust” actor. Twitter user @arealswede said, “KARMA AT ITS BEST!” along with a link to a BBC report about the accidental set shooting.
#AlecForPrison was used by some Trump supporters on Twitter after news of the shooting emerged. Fox News commentator Candace Owens also said in a since-deleted tweet that “what has happened to Alec would be an example of poetic justice if it weren’t for the actual innocent people that were murdered by him.”
Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance also campaigned for the reinstatement of the former president’s Twitter account. “We need Alec Baldwin tweets,” he wrote on the social media site.
Following criticism of his recent actions, Trump Jr. wrote, “screw all the sanctimony I’m seeing out there,” on an Instagram story, The Hill reported.
“Rust” director Joel Souza said Baldwin was rehearsing a scene that involved drawing a revolver from the holster and pointing the gun at the camera when he accidentally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, an affidavit released during the weekend revealed, ABC News reported. Souza was also injured by the shot.
Details about the set shooting are still emerging, but authorities said assistant director Dave Halls handed the gun to Baldwin and announced that it was a “cold gun,” which meant the firearm was not loaded. Halls has been subject to a complaint relating to disregard of safety protocols in weapon use.
