Trump Defends Biden Against Sexual Assault Allegations: 'Could Be False Accusations'
KEY POINTS
- Tara Reade accuses Joe Biden of touching her inappropriately in an alleged sexual assault in 1993
- She only made the allegations public in March
- The Metropolitan Police Department said Reade filed the report "for safety reasons only"
Former vice president Joe Biden was recently accused of inappropriately touching a woman when she was working as a Senate employee in 1993. What's surprising is President Donald Trump's response to the same, with the former saying his rival for the presidency, Biden, might have been falsely accused.
“I don’t know anything about it," according to Trump. "I think he should respond. It could be false accusations. I know all about false accusations. I’ve been falsely charged numerous times, and there is such a thing.”
As of 2019, at least 25 women have accused President Donald Trump of sexual misconduct over the past four decades. Trump has consistently replied to these accusations by denouncing these women as liars.
Tara Reade is the only woman to have accused Biden,77, of an alleged sexual assault. Biden's campaign team denied Reade's allegations, which she made public in March.
Biden has kept his silence about Reade's allegations despite there being new evidence seeming to confirm her claims. His campaign now says Biden will reveal his version of the events on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Friday morning.
In Reade's version, Biden (then 50 years old) pushed her against a wall in a Capitol Hill office building before touching her inappropriately.
"His hands went underneath my clothing and he was touching me in my private areas and without my consent," she said in an NPR podcast.
She said when she pulled away, Biden looked puzzled and said, "Come on, man, I heard you liked me."
After the event, Reade complained about the harassment to three of Biden's aides but didn't mention the sexual assault. She said she was later fired by one of Biden's aides.
"I'm hoping by coming forward with this -- and I know it's hard to listen to, and it's hard to live in it, right?" she said. "But my justice now, the only justice I can have, is to be moving freely in the world and to heal and not be silenced."
It was only April 9, Reade filed a police report with Washington D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) alleging she was sexually assaulted in 1993. She named Biden as her assailant.
On April 25, MPD said her complaint is an inactive case. It said Reade acknowledged the statute of limitations has lapsed, and added she filed the report "for safety reasons only."
