Former President Donald Trump on Saturday endorsed TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, who is seeking the Republican Senate nomination in the 2022 election. The Senate seat will be vacant after incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Toomey announced he would not seek re-election.

"This is all about winning elections in order to stop the Radical Left maniacs from destroying our Country," Trump said in his endorsement statement for the celebrity heart surgeon and host of “The Dr. Oz Show."

Like Trump, Dr. Oz is a TV personality-turned-politician with no political experience. Trump, who was once a reality TV star on "The Apprentice," explained how a well-known and respected TV personality can help take down Democrats in November.

"The Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has a tremendous opportunity to Save America by electing the brilliant and well-known Dr. Mehmet Oz for the United States Senate," the endorsement read.

"I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show. He has lived with us through the screen and has always been popular, respected and smart," Trump added.

Dr. Oz was competing for Trump’s endorsement for the May 17 primary against former hedge fund CEO David McCormick.

Dr. Oz, 61, received both his Master of Business Administration and medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2020, he changed his voter registration to the home of his in-laws in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, despite spending most of his life in New Jersey. Like Trump, he spends time at his home in Palm Beach, Florida.

Dr. Oz's reported earning about $10 million in 2021. Most of his income is from his media position.

Following the endorsement, Dr. Oz released a statement pledging to stand up against President Joe Biden, while expressing admiration for Trump's endorsement.

“President Trump wisely endorsed me because I’m a conservative who will stand up to Joe Biden and the woke left," he said.
