President Donald Trump reportedly got mad at the Mar-a-Lago staff three days before Christmas over renovations made to his private quarters, which were overseen by first lady Melania Trump.
A dark mood fell upon the president after he entered his members-only golf club in Palm Beach County, Florida, during a winter holiday. Trump became enraged over the renovations of the 3,000-square-foot space, a source familiar with the incident told CNN.
The renovations to his residence, which began several weeks ago, were overseen by Melania and interior decorator Tham Kannalikham, and the president was reportedly well aware of that. The revamping, designed to make the space seem larger, included white marble and dark wood, but that did not appeal to Trump's aesthetics. And there were other renovations at Mar-a-Trump that weren't to Trump's liking, according to the source.
The outgoing president reportedly called the club management, with whom he reportedly had a loud, one-sided conversation about the change in design.
"He was not happy with it," the source said.
Trump also wasn't happy with decorative renovations made to Camp David, another undertaking that Melania oversaw, when he saw them during the Thanksgiving holiday, a different source said.
Trump's angry reaction to the Mar-a-Lago renovation appears to go hand-in-hand with his overall demeanor ever since he and his family have arrived at the residence. According to the source at the club, Trump seems to be "moody," and hasn't mingled and chatted with people as much as he did during past Christmas holidays. "The vibe is off," another Mar-a-Lago source noted.
Trump is still expected to host his annual black-tie New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday night. At least 500 reservations for the event had been confirmed on Tuesday, a Mar-a-Lago member said.
Ticket prices for the party has continued to grow each year since Trump won the 2016 election. In 2018, members of the president’s golf club paid $650 to attend the event, while guests of Mar-a-Lago members paid $1,000.
Trump’s New Year’s Eve parties have been attended by various celebrities , including actress-singer Vanessa Williams in 2004, and singer Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster-Stewart and Sally Lancaster in 2014.
During the Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve event in 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for president and led the New Year’s countdown live on Fox News.
It is unclear whether party attendees plan to follow coronavirus mitigation guidelines during the New Year's Eve party. Earlier this month, people who attended a gala hosted by conservative student group Turning Point USA flouted mask and social distancing requirements at Mar-a-Lago. Photos from the event showed hundreds of people packed in the Mar-a-Lago ballroom.
In Florida, Health officials on Tuesday confirmed over 12,075 cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total number of cases to 1,292,252. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Florida also increased by 105.
