KEY POINTS

  • Sen. Lindsey Graham accuses Democrats of not loving anything constitutional
  • He made this claim as he blasted Democrats for adding a new wrinkle to the impeachment process by withholding the articles of impeachment
  • He claims not calling witnesses to the Senate trial will deny Trump his day in court

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the man president Donald Trump insulted as "one of the dumbest human beings I’ve ever seen" back in February 2016, has again come to Trump's defense. This time Graham claims House majority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is “taking a wrecking ball to the Constitution" by withholding the articles of impeachment from the Senate.

The former presidential candidate, who was also once blasted by Trump as "a disgrace," also accused Pelosi of trampling on the separation of powers. Graham's inexplicable about face as one of Trump's most strident Republican critics to his current status as one of the most ardent Trump defenders in the Senate still leaves many puzzled.

Back in 2016, Graham said on Fox News that Trump (who at the time was the Republican front-runner) would make a “terrible commander in chief.” He also predicted the Republican Party would get “slaughtered” with Trump as the nominee. Events proved Graham wrong, however.

On Sunday, Graham was back at Fox News in his latest defense of Trump. He said Pelosi's move not to transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate proves she wants reassurances the Republicans will agree to the Democrats' demands to call several witnesses before sending over the charges.

“This is the latest in a series of constitutional train wrecks orchestrated by Nancy Pelosi,” said Graham on Fox News' “Sunday Morning Futures."

“During the impeachment process, the president was not allowed to have counsel present during the Intel Committee, he could not call witnesses on his behalf, he could not confront his accuser and now that he’s been charged with two articles of impeachment, Nancy Pelosi is denying his day in the court in the Senate and she is actually trying to tell (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell how to run the Senate.”

“She’s trampling on the separation of powers,” Graham added, noting that it's the Senat's job now to take on the impeachment articles. "When it comes to Trump, the rules don’t matter to Democrats and that’s dangerous and sad.”

Graham again repeated a point he's made many times before. Hate is driving the Democrats towards impeachment.

“Democrats hate him so much they don’t love anything constitutional anymore,” alleges Graham. “All the rules have been thrown in a ditch to get Trump. From the way they impeached him to now, denying his day in court.”

“Here’s how it’s going to end: She’ll (Pelosi will) eventually send the articles because public opinion will crush the Democrats."

Trump previously blocked top administration officials from testifying as part of the House impeachment inquiry. Trump claimed he made this obstruction of Congress to protect the office of the presidency and “future presidents."

On Sunday, the Trump War Room Twitter page also posted Graham's crticism of the Democrats: "Democrats hate (President Trump) so much, they don’t love anything constitutional anymore. All the rules have been thrown in a ditch to get Trump, from the way they impeached him to now denying his day in court."
